The announcement, initially made on SCA’s group website on July 23, says chairman Anders Ek has been appointed interim managing director. The interim role will last until a permanent solution is found.

TTJ contacted Mr Emsley, who said he had no comment about his future at this stage, while Mr Ek said he was quite surprised Mr Emsley had left the company.

SCA Timber Supply UK subsequently issued a press statement saying it was restructuring its UK management team in light of a doubling of business in the coming months, mainly because of a new supply arrangement with Travis Perkins.

"With the rapid development of new business in the past four months, particularly with our latest new customer addition, the Travis Perkins Group, a strengthened link between our UK business and Swedish sawmill production is needed," Mr Ek in the press statement.

"I have been given responsibility for the role during this transitional phase, thus bringing SCA Timber Supply Sweden and SCA Timber Supply UK closer together."

It is the third time Mr Ek has taken on the role of managing director, after heading up the business in 2006-07 and again briefly before Mr Emsley’s appointment, following the death of former managing director Rob Simpson.

Mr Emsley was SCA Timber Supply’s group operations director since 2007 before assuming the role of managing director in March this year.

Several key SCA senior management appointments are currently being made.
