The Structural Awards 2013, which celebrate achievement, innovation and excellence in structural engineering, attract entries from around the world and timber is represented in several categories.
The prefabricated timber and steel building on Southend Pier has been shortlisted in the Arts and Entertainment category, while London’s 40m-high Strand East Tower, built from 180x80mm glulam larch laths, is a contender for the Small Projects award. The Kebony modified wood Kreod Pavilion is also on the Small Projects shortlist.
Bishop Edward King Chapel, which features finger-jointed glulam beams, is shortlisted in the Community or Residential category. It is also shortlisted for this year’s Wood Awards.
Projects abroad include the Carterton Events Centre, New Zealand, uses pre-stressed LVL to provide seismic resistance, and Tsingtao Pearl Visitor Centre in Qingdao, China.
