Jersey-based Huelin-Renouf Shipping Ltd and its Southampton-based arm Eagleway Freight Ltd went into liquidation and administration respectively on August 20 & 21 – the latest casualties in the Channel Islands shipping business.

“We have worked with the State of Jersey to ensure all cargo at Southampton that was destined for the island was delivered,” said Southampton port director Doug Morrison.

“The vessel Huelin Despatch has since returned and is currently in Southampton.” According to the BBC, builders merchant Norman Piette had about 160 tonnes of building materials delayed at Southampton.

The Huelin Despatch ship was the only vessel run by the shipping company and only began service with it last year. Liquidators Grant Thornton were unable to agree similar delivery arrangements in Guernsey. Customers from the island with goods in Southampton were being contacted separately to make arrangements for delivery.

About 20 staff worked at Eagleway Freight Ltd at 45 Berth, Southampton eastern docks.

Huelin-Renouf, which has 90 staff in total, has been operating a UK mainland-Channel Islands transportation service since 1935.

Directors began winding up the company when attempts to sell the business failed.
