The company has borrowed €140m over seven years at 3%.
"Stora Enso invested €81m in research and development in 2012," said Bernd Rettig, senior vice-president for R&D and capital investments.
"The R&D platforms include bio-based barriers, micro materials, composites, biochemistry and separation technology, and wood-based building solutions. About 50 patent applications were registered last year."
Stora Enso acting CFO Jyrki Tammivuori said: "This is Stora Enso’s third loan from EIB to be used for research and development projects. The terms of the loan are competitive."
