Mark Fleming, Brooks Bros sales and marketing director, told TTJ that the Maldon-based company had passed the case on to the fraud team at its bank, Barclays, to investigate and it has contacted all its customers to warn them of the scam.

Mr Fleming said one of its larger customers had been targeted by an emailed letter this week containing a made-up Brooks Bros letterhead and giving “new” company account details based at Nat West.

“It was sent from an email address that looks similar to our email and the letter contained spelling errors,” he said. Brooks, Maldon and Skelmersdale were all spelled incorrectly in the letter.

“The customer thankfully rang to query it.”

The Barclays fraud team are liaising with Nat West about an account at the latter bank being used for the proceeds of a fraud with the hope that the account will be closed down.
