Weyerhaeuser Company has closed its plywood operation at Millport, Alabama with the loss of 250 jobs.

The company blames declining markets for plywood panels and local log supply issues for the decision which is likely to affect earnings when its first quarter results are announced in April.

The lumber operation at Millport, which employs 80 people, will continue to operate.

Rodney J Dempster, vice-president of Southern Plywood, said: “We regret that this action has become necessary. The outstanding employees at Millport have done everything they possibly could to make the business successful.”

The millwood plywood plant, shut since February 20 because of local log supply issues, had the capacity to produce 224 million ft2 of softwood plywood annually.
