Indonesia’s newly-established Forestry Industry Revitalisation Agency (BRIK) wants to see the government remove taxes on imported logs.
BRIK believes a tax break on imported timber would help the timber industry, particularly plywood producers, to maintain competitiveness in the export market.
Imported timber currently attracts duties totalling about 25% but BRIK says this is compounded by illegal fees and long delays at customs.
Plywood producers have been forced to import timber due to the government’s policy of limiting logging to protect the country’s forests.
BRIK has already asked customs and excise to allow imported logs entry to Indonesia without inspection.
