Mr Griffiths assumed the role of managing director today, starting a fresh chapter at SCA’s UK timber business, which has doubled in size in the past 12 months following supply deals with Wickes and Travis Perkins.

Anders Ek, who now returns to his normal role as chairman of SCA Timber Supply UK, said Mr Griffiths’s top-level management experience fitted the expansive future of the UK business.

"John Griffiths’s expertise stretches across the span of our business interests in the UK," he said. "He will be well known to many from his years in the timber and builders merchant sector and in DIY retailing."

SCA has invested in a multi-million pound production centre near Hull to serve Travis Perkins. Two mouldings lines and a resaw line will be fully operational early in the new year.

The additional business from Wickes and Travis Perkins represents a growth in turnover for SCA of, it is believed, in the region of £50m.

Mr Griffiths spent seven years as MD of Alsford Timber, leaving in 2005 to head up TradePro Card Services before becoming a specialist in business improvement and turnaround services. This latter role included being appointed CEO to lead the turnaround of food packaging giant the Nicholl Group.
