Inverurie-based Scotframe shipped 32 containers from Tilbury Docks in early December for a 20-house order by Morrison (Falklands) Ltd on behalf of client the Falklands Islands government.
The kits were initially shipped to South America before their onward journey to the Falklands. The kits will be used by Morrisons to build three three-bedroom houses and 17 two-bedroom dwellings.
Scotframe marketing manager Peter Hall said the company supplied timber kits to the islands every year, but had never received such a large single order before. The company has supplied 40 timber kits to the Falklands in the past five years.
Shipping timber frame kits from the UK has become accepted as a preferred build route in the Falklands. Mr Hall said the lack of forests on the Falklands was a major hurdle to any domestic timber frame manufacturing plant being established there. Suitable timber for production, he added, would have to be imported from a considerable distance, adding to costs.
Scientific studies have shown that several tree species could be suitable for commercial planting in the Falklands, including radiata pine on a few sheltered, accessible sites.
