The Croatian government is proposing measures to protect its timber and wood domestic production from high levels of imports.

According to official sources, the Croatian timber sector remains the country’s second biggest exporter, but has been ‘devastated’ during the past 10 years by overseas competition.

Economy minister Hrvoje Vojkovic said that the government was now looking at increasing import duties and establishing quota levels in certain import categories.

He said that any controls would not clash with Croatia’s obligations as a World Trade Organisation member and would last a maximum of four years.

Mr Vojkovic said on June 13 that a decree on the issue would be put forward to government in the following 30 days.
