The WWF launched its local authority pledge scheme in 2012, awarding bronze, silver and gold, according to the level of commitment.

Haringey introduced its procurement policy the same year and sustainable business manager Ben Brown said that in the past three months 100% of its forest products, from construction timber to stationery, was certified as sustainable.

He added that the council’s contractors were positive about the policy.

WWF Global Forest and Trade network manager Julia Young said Haringey had shown it was possible to ensure all timber and paper products purchased were from sustainable sources.

"By working with the WWF they are helping to make forest trade more responsible and are supporting those forest producers and suppliers of timber and timber products who are trying to make sustainability the norm," she said.

According to the WWF, more than half of UK local authorities do not have a legal and sustainable timber procurement policy.
