"The reaction has been very positive," he said. "It’s a simple solution, but both effective and cost-effective."

Safestep has been developed in response to the growing trend in UK new housing architecture towards higher roofs, using 2.5+ fink-style trusses.

"This gives the guys on site a challenge fixing ridge bracing and doing other roof work at the top of the truss," said Mr Fellingham.

"They either overstretch, clamber onto webs on the trusses, or look for other solutions, potentially risking safety and quality of work," he said.

The solution offered by DTE is SafeStep, a steel bar with fastenings enabling it to be fixed temporarily to the rafter, then demounted and moved to the next work area.

Mr Fellingham added that the patent-pending invention, developed with TRAD Safety Systems, has undergone successful tests with Taylor Wimpey.
