The US countervailing and anti-dumping duties on Canadian softwood lumber imports led to Interfor recording a loss of C$1.9m in the fourth quarter of 2001.

Without the C$5.7m pre-tax provision for US duties the company would have had net earnings of C$1.7m. Sales declined to C$175m in the fourth quarter from C$193m in the previous quarter.

Duncan Davies, Interfor president and chief executive officer, said: ‘These duties are particularly onerous for companies operating on the BC coast.’
