The European Union has criticised Indonesia’s record on forestry management.

The EU’s Consultative Group on Indonesia claims that the country could provide little evidence of success in resolving deforestation problems. Despite Ministry of Forestry efforts, illegal logging had increased and policy initiatives toward sustainable forest management had yet to be effectively implemented.

The EU reported that illegal exploitation in the 1980s and 1990s led to the loss of around 1.7 million ha of forest per year.
