Pallet buyers wanting to switch from one-trip to long-life pallets can spread the obligation – and the cost – by turning to a little used section in the Packaging Waste Regulations, according to the National Association of Pallet Distributors (NAPD).

This one-off concession, designed to encourage a switch to long-life packaging, allows the changeover to take place over four years instead of one.

NAPD spokesperson Greg Milton said: ‘Any company that thinks it could benefit should consult its local Environment Agency (EA) office before taking any action as the EA has to be satisfied that the company will be instituting a reuse system.

‘To reuse pallets is sound economic sense as pallets can last for many years, there is a good market for used pallets and a programme of repair can extend their life yet further,’ he said.
