Mr Priday joined the family company, Sydney Priday & Snewin, in 1947, eventually becoming managing director. He retired from the company when he was in his seventies.

He was also well-known in the world of bridge, representing England in the Home Internationals over six decades. He was also the Sunday Telegraph’s bridge correspondent for more than 35 years.

During the second world war Mr Priday joined the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, rising to the rank of major.
