The decision means participating members can provide new credit facilities under the scheme until March 31 next year and they will remain in place until March 31, 2016.

The scheme gives approved companies access to up to £50m of government-backed guarantees.

BMF managing director John Newcomb said the scheme had helped BMF members take on more business by extending additional credit to customers.

Jon Moore of merchant WJ Lewis said his company used the scheme to trade with contractors it would not normally deal with. “We can use it selectively if we are unsure of a contractor’s status,” he said.

The BMF has lined up TV builder Tommy Walsh to speak at its All Industry Conference in Malta in June. The conference will be hosted by Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies and the keynote speaker will be Tony Blair’s former spin doctor, Alastair Campbell.
