The Ulster Timber Growers Organisation has asked to join forces with the UK mainland-based Timber Growers Association.

The move would create a single representative body for UK growers and increase lobbying strength in Brussels, Whitehall and Stormont.

Plans to merge the TGA with the Association of Professional Foresters are also on the table. This would create a body of more than 3,000 members.

In a letter to APF members, the TGA said: ‘Far from diluting our ability to represent [woodland] owners, this would be a powerful force to further the interests of forestry in the UK and strengthen our hand in Europe’.

Mr Yull said the merger would cut duplication of activities and improve services to members.
