Austria is a large sawn timber producer and many of its mills supply to the UK, but it is Austrian engineered timber that has struck a chord with the market.
Austria puts major resources into timber R&D, leading to high degrees of innovation and helping producers, such as KLH, Binderholz and Wiehag, develop the UK market for cross laminated timber and glulam.
The most successful Austrian companies work with UK partners on design and delivery, to increase timber’s construction share and broaden applications. We hear of interest in wood as a viable option for an increasing project range; residential, commercial and educational building and transport hubs, notably Wiehag’s Canary Wharf Crossrail concourse.
Austria also has a strong self-build sector, where prefabricated timber housing is popular. Now large prefabricated house suppliers, such as DEIN Holding, are in prime position to tap into the drive towards self-build and other offsite building systems in the UK.
