A training organisation – the National Heritage Training Group (NHTG) – has been established to develop traditional building skills.

Backed and funded by English Heritage and CITB-ConstructionSkills, it is also supported by contractors, further education institutions, government agencies, trades unions and other heritage bodies.

A career brochure has been published along with a business plan which has identified three areas for attention: to develop and implement a formal structure which ensures the NHTG’s work is integrated with other stakeholders; to fill gaps in information about the skills and labour needs in the UK; and to develop and implement a traditional building crafts skills training plan.

Specialist skills included in the scheme include carpentry and joinery.
