Mr Maxwell started the company in 1959 with one office in central Bristol, having relocated from his beloved Newcastle.

Being a very astute businessman and a demanding but very fair employer, he went on to create an extremely successful business. He retired in the late 1980s.

Mr Maxwell retained a very keen interest in the company right up to his late 80s, always attending the annual general meeting, and challenging his successors with regular phone calls and searching questions.

In his retirement he turned his attention to charity work, raising money to build several nursing homes, often using materials obtained from Taylor Maxwell.

Mr Maxwell himself spent his latter years in a nursing home on the outskirts of Bristol.

The Maxwell family retains a small shareholding in the company.
