Unusual wooden block murals are being constructed in a Kent workshop using the Hoffman jointing system.

The murals, symmetrical in two dimensions but featuring blocks of different heights, are being created at Ashford Woodturners in Hothfield for top London hotels and retail chains.

The company says cutting and preparing the blocks has proved straightforward but jointing presented a problem, especially as the murals are designed without any outside frame.

It used the Hoffman system of jointing with serrated dovetail keys inserted into a routed slot or keyway.

Keyways are routed into the back of each block and then adhesive is manually applied to the jointed faces. Dovetail keys of various lengths are inserted and tapped down with a mallet.
