The UK’s leading wood industry awards – the TTJ Awards – has been recognising achievement across the timber sector supply chain for 23 years.

Starting off in 1997, the event initially focused on recognising service and product quality among suppliers of softwood, hardwood and wood-based panel products.

This was expanded to innovation (sponsored by TRADA and UK Construction Week), achievement in engineered timber, joinery and structural timber systems (in association with the Structural Timber Association). Winners of the latter voted-for category have included MTE Leicester and Stewart Milne Timber Systems.

The increase in timber construction and in particular the use of glulam post and beam, LVL and cross-laminated timber (CLT) in signature build projects has led TTJ to create two additional categories in the Awards in recognition of this trend.

The TTJ Public or Commercial Use of Timber in Construction award recognises build projects that demonstrate excellent use of structural timber in public or commercial buildings.

Projects may involve CLT, glulam, LVL, oak, softwood or other timber-based build systems and they must detail the design brief, the specification and application of structural timber used, hurdles overcome and the impact the project has made.

The TTJ Private Residential Use of Timber in Construction is designed to reward private residential structural timber build projects which demonstrate excellence in their design, scope and use of structural timber, be it standard timber frame, post and beam or engineered timber construction such as CLT, glulam or LVL.

Projects can be anything from a single house up to a large development.

“Over the years we have covered the growth of timber construction in the pages of TTJ and in our annual timber construction supplement, visiting timber frame factories in Britain and in Europe, as well as going to construction sites to see the latest CLT and glulam builds,” said Stephen Powney, TTJ group editor.

“It is only fitting that we expand our existing Achievement in Engineered Timber category to recognise what is going on to complement the successful trade categories.”

A further new award, sponsored by timber products distributor James Latham, is the TTJ Timber Interiors Fit Out Award, which recognises excellent and inspiring use of timber and wood products in interior design projects.

The question is who will win these awards in 2019?

To find out the answer, come along to the TTJ Awards luncheon presentation taking place on September 13 at the Hilton London Bankside, with comedian Zoe Lyons the host and guest speaker.

With companies drawn from across the UK timber products supply chain, ranging from softwood and hardwood importers, merchants, door and window suppliers, structural timber systems suppliers and specialist wood product manufacturers, it’s a great networking opportunity for contractors, specifiers and architects.
