A new £400,000 MDF paper wrapping plant in Liverpool is planned to be producing at full capacity by the end of the month.

Universal Mouldings – sister company of Merseyside timber merchant Terry’s Timber and sheet material merchant Mersey Timber Group – will be capable of producing 150,000, 2.4m-long units per month from its new 11,000ft² factory.

The venture, which benefits from a £35,000 Department of Trade and Industry grant, employs five at its site in Aintree.

The MDF is being machined to profile on a tailor-made six-head Futura moulder fitted with the latest chrome air bed system to ensure exact profiles accurate to 100th of a millimetre. A computer-controlled Euromac beam saw with a cutting capacity of 500 sheets of MDF per hour and an accuracy of cut equal to the standards of the moulder has also been installed.

Additional machines include a British-manufactured foil wrapping machine.

Universal Mouldings joint managing director Terry Stephens said limited supply of MDF mouldings would ensure strong demand for the com-pany’s output.

‘When we were looking to buy beadings ourself we discovered that there was no choice. Only white and beech were available. It was almost the same story in picture framing,’ he said.

Universal also hopes to win customers on the back of being able to deliver anywhere in the UK within five working days of ordering.
