American hardwood sales continue to grow in the UK and Ireland, with white oak still the number one species.
Latest statistics show that US hardwood exports increased in volume worldwide by 5.8% during 2000 to 2.95 million m³. Volumes to the EU increased by 4.2% to 840,274m³, making exports to the UK account for 43.7% of total world export of US hardwood lumber – excluding exports to Canada.
The top three volume markets all increased, with Italy up 8.7%, Spain up 15% and the UK up 1.6% to 126,286m³. The Irish market was up 55.2% to 24,428m³ – the ninth largest volume in the EU for the year.
The American Hardwood Export Council says the results are encouraging, especially in view of price rises for many American species, coupled with the plentiful supply of European hardwoods fuelled by the storms of winter 1999.
