The foot and mouth epidemic and last autumn’s flooding have forced the closure of small Yorkshire merchant and sawmiller J Dutko (Sawmills) Ltd.
The family-run firm, started in the early 1950s and based in Malton, has made its six staff redundant and was due to be liquidated at a meeting of creditors on June 22.
Dutko had seen its core business with local farmers, especially fencing, hit hard by foot and mouth. It had also suffered in the flooding, being cut off by flood water for periods.
