The Confederation of British Industry predicts manufacturing will come out of its ‘technical recession’ by the end of the year and see modest growth in 2002.
CBI director-general Digby Jones said manufacturing would continue to be the ‘key weakspot’ in the UK economy while Timber Trade Federation spokesperson Mark O’Brien said it would be ‘good news’ if output picked up at the end of the year. He added: ‘I am surprised, given that the US economy is heading into recession and news from the Far East is not good.’
