Panel product manufacturers are to have access to funding to boost the quantity of timber that they recycle.

WRAP – set up by the Department of the Environ-ment, Food and Rural Affairs, the DTI, the Scottish Executive and the Welsh National Assembly – is offering panel producers grants to install capital equipment that will increase the quantity of timber they recycle.

The agency also has funds available to those developing technology for wood recycling.

The amount of money available is not being revealed as WRAP says it wants people to submit good quality applications without considering the size of funding they may win.

WRAP material sector manager for wood Tom Fourcade said: ‘This initiative will enable significant growth in UK wood recycling capacity. This is a practical demonstration of our support to industry by stimulating increased investment.’

The new recycling capacity, which WRAP wants to come on stream during 2002/03, will assist the UK in meeting its commitments under the EC Landfill Directive to divert biodegradable municipal waste from landfill.
