The UN has called for a temporary ban on the purchase of timber and other resources from parts of the Congo occupied by foreign armies.

A report from the organisation claims that unabated plundering of resources by foreign armies is prolonging a three-year civil war in the central African country. The 38-page report singles out Zimbabwe – one of the three countries Congo invited to defend it against invasion – for demanding large mineral and timber concessions in exchange for military assistance.

The governments of Congo and Zimbabwe have launched campaigns to counter the claims of the report.
