A health authority is to investigate claims that emissions from Sonae’s Challenger woodchip plant at Knowsley have caused health problems for local residents.

St Helens and Knowsley health authority will start its investigations at Easter.

A Knowsley council report in 2000 said that emissions from the factory were not a threat to health.

Meanwhile, a number of local residents who claim their health has suffered are beginning legal action in an attempt to claim compensation from the company.

Challenger’s management have declined to comment.
