A total of 1,200m of engineered timber BCI-Joists from Boise Cascade have been used throughout the second floor of a nine-storey block of flats in Paisley, Scotland.
The joists were supplied by timber engineering specialists Stevenson & Kelly who also designed the floor plan and the timber roof trusses.
Danny Clark, a director of Stevenson & Kelly says the original plan was to use steel carcassone throughout but this proved less economical than the BCI-Joist alternative.
The standard 14.5m BCI-Joists were cut to size by Stevenson & Kelly prior to despatch as a complete floor package. This made on-site handling in Paisley easier and subsequent erection quicker – with associated cost advantages to the developer.
Mr Clark said: ‘We’ve supplied quite a lot of BCI-Joists this year and there’s increasing interest being shown right across the housing market.’
He says the joists are particularly effective in blocks of flats as the stiffness of the product reduces creaking floors.
