The construction industry is being urged by BRE to respond positively to the Fairclough report which looks at how the right construction research skills and facilities can be secured for the future.

Construction Minister Brian Wilson said the report provides an excellent framework for improving the effectiveness of r&d in construction, and a real opportunity for the industry to make a step change in innovation.

BRE chief executive Dr Martin Wyatt backs the key recommendations of the report but warned that if the industry is to secure effective implementation by government it must respond positively.

He said the industry should welcome the proposal that the sponsorship research strategy becomes industry rather than government led and support the report’s contention that construction has historically been ‘under funded’ by government compared to other sectors.

The report also recommends that the government should procure research needed to support the new industry-led strategy and government policy to develop stable networks and centres of excellence.
