Energy and construction minister Brian Wilson backed calls for increased use of prefabrication in the construction industry when he visited the Torwood factory in Ipswich on Monday.

Mr Wilson said: ‘Prefabricated components can help improve the quality of the finished building and open the door to further innovations in product manufacture to improve energy efficiency. Torwood provides an effective demonstration of the government’s desire to increase the use of off-site fabrication techniques in construction.’

The Torwood factory is partnered with the Amphion Consortium, a group of more than 20 housing associations which encourage increased use of off-site fabrication techniques and component construction.

Amphion has been submitted as a demonstration project to the Housing Forum, part of the Rethinking Construction initiative which is backed by the government and the construction industry.
