Shopfitter the Barlow Group Ltd has slashed its wood waste disposal costs by more than a half after introducing a Weima shredder.

The Sheffield-based company, whose customers include Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury, invested around £16,000 in the Weima WL4 S fully automatic shredder after discovering it spent £180 a week (£8,800 a year) on landfill waste.

The shredder now ensures the skip is full before waste collection and it is collected every two-and-a-half weeks instead of weekly.

Offcuts fed into the shredder include MDF, chipboard, laminate and solid timber from two CNC routers, two beam saws and several smaller machines. The shredded material is transported into a Dust Control Systems Ltd extraction system, filtered and collected in bins which are tipped into the skip.

Barlows now plans to install a wood fired boiler to allow shredded material to be used as free fuel to provide energy for factory space heating.
