Myanmar has made its biggest business deal with India in an export order for 1,000 tonnes of teak valued at US$1m.

The deal was agreed in Yangon between the Myanmar Forestry Ministry and the visiting Indo-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Overall teak exports from Myanmar totalled 301,678m2 in 2001, a slight drop from 2000. It produced about 200,000 tonnes of teak from its forests each year since 1997-98, down from around 400,000 tonnes a year in the 1970s.
