An analysis of factors that influence standing coniferous timber sales in the UK has been published for the first time by Tilhill Forestry Ltd in conjunction with the Timber Marketing Group and the Forestry and Timber Association.
The ‘Tilhill Timber Bulletin’ contains data gathered over recent months, records material trends and influences, and seeks to identify significant developing issues. It will be updated as and when substantial shifts in trends and opportunities are spotted.
Key conclusions from data gathered for the bulletin are: a close correlation between exchange rates and sawlog prices; existing capacity is largely geared to medium dimension material; the market for Forest Stewardship Council certified timber through the UK Woodland Assurance Scheme will grow and growers without such certification may be at a price disadvantage.
Tilhill managing director Matthew Rivers said: ‘Quality information is essential if woodland owners are to realise the best price for standing conifer crops. If all timber growing today is to have a market, new demand must be created.’
