An investment of about £250,000 is helping Integrated Manufacturing Systems (IMS) meet a rapidly expanding order book and overcome the need for finding skilled labour.

The company, which includes the IMS Cabinets division specialising in components and products finished in high-impact laminates and veneered boards, bought a raft of machinery through the SCM Group for its then new 22,000ft2 Hull factory in October 2000.

Machinery specified by design and production manager Andy Wood included a Record 220 machining centre, a Sigma 90C automatic panel beam saw, Contura/Pratika contour edge banding and trimming machines, a T130 spindle moulder, plus a number of smaller machines including a post forming unit.

The Record 220 has a 10ft x 4ft bed size and 10 station tool changer, complete with Licom’s Alphacam CAD/CAM system enabling fast turnaround from order to despatch for any panel or component parts.

This proved so successful, a second CNC router was ordered from SCM in January this year – a Record 121 with 12 station tool changer and multi-drilling facility.

The Sigma 90c beam saw has a 3200 x 3200mm capacity, side pressure alignment and is capable of precise cutting of all materials, including laminates, quickly and accurately, whether stacked or one board at a time.

The Contura is then used to edgeband with laminate strips or rollfeed materials on to straight or curved panels, with trimming on the Pratika.

Clients include companies in the commercial, leisure, office and retail industries.
