Three organisations have been awarded a total of £250,000 towards wood recycling research and development projects by WRAP – the Waste and Resources Action Programme.

They are among 13 organisations which will benefit to the tune of £1.9m in the second round of funding awards.

The BioComposites Centre is to receive £200,000 for a project examining Near Infrared Reflectance Analysis as a tool for assessing recycled wood in particleboard products. TRADA Technology Ltd has been earmarked to receive £40,000 for its rapid identification and sorting of preservative treated timber and Lothian Tree Services Ltd will get £10,000 towards its project to develop waste sawdust as a plant protection material for horticulture and agriculture.

WRAP’s chief executive Jennie Price said: “We are very pleased with the quality of applications we have received in this round of funding. It has reaffirmed to us the huge potential for innovative use of recycled materials in the UK marketplace.

“Funding market development R&D is very much in line with WRAP’s role of creating markets for recycled materials and products. Good quality R&D is a key building block in seeking a step change in recycling across the UK.”
