Emerging cabinet and kitchen door producer Carmel Doors has upgraded its sanding facilities to improve the quality of finishing.

An Orbilak throughfeed sander, the first to be supplied in the UK by Abacon Ltd, was brought in to replace an existing rotary pre-sanding and de-nibbing system, which had only been offering “satisfactory” results.

The four-head 1300mm Orbilak has been installed at Carmel’s workshops at Coombe Bissett near Salisbury, where a range of doors including MDF Shaker doors in single or five-piece construction are made.

The model has four in-line heads inclined at about 16 degrees so the sanding process is “introduced” rather than “head-on presented” to the workpiece, resulting in an inprovement in finishing quality. It has Uniflex strip abrasive brush hubs in 100mm sections mounted on shafts for quick and easy removal/changeover.

It is controlled via a central electronic panel with touch-screen, while the first head can be made inoperable for certain, sensitive procedures.
