Quality Mark challenges the cowboys

The government’s anti-cowboy builder initiative has been rolled out in the Midlands.

Scores of tradesemen, including joiners and carpenters, from Warwickshire, Solihull and Coventry were invited to a recruitment event to join the hundreds of businesses which have signed up to the Quality Mark scheme since it was piloted in July last year.

Construction minister Brian Wilson said: “Bringing the Quality Mark to local tradesmen sends a clear signal to cowboy builders that we will not stand for shoddy workmanship or consumer rip-offs.”

Those that have signed up to the scheme say it has already paid dividends. Walsall firm ARGS Ltd reported an increase in turnover of £200,000 and an influx of enquiries since receiving the Quality Mark.

To qualify, traders must demonstrate the standard of their work through a simple independent assessment.
