Stafford-based Talbotts Ltd has supplied a C9 2.5MW energy from waste system at Arnold Laver’s new £8m production centre at Sheffield.

All solid timber offcut waste from the centre and several regional depots is processed on site in a four tonne/hour shredder to produce a fuel wood chip which, along with hardwood shavings, is burnt in the 2.5MW medium pressure C9 hot water from waste boiler.

A 200m3 storage silo holds 50 tonnes of the wood chips that are automatically fed to the computer-controlled boiler 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Emissions from the combustion plant, which satisfy stringent licensing and legislation requirements, are constantly monitored.

Nearly 900m of insulated underground pipework deliver the 3-bar pressure, 110 degrees C hot water to various buildings around the site.

The system is operated by one person in a single shift who receives and processes the timber while overseeing plant operation.
