A nursery in North Tyneside is getting a £520,000 makeover, including a 315m2 timber frame extension, as part of a new government initiative.

The Killingworth Nursery is one of the first to benefit from the government’s Sure Start drive which aims to tackle child poverty and social exclusion.

Blyth-based Timber Frame Solutions (TFS) will design, manufacture and erect the new extension, which is due for completion early next year. The fact that the existing single storey nursery was originally constructed using timber frame was a deciding factor.

“Not only is timber frame consistent with the existing nursery building,” said Bill Brophy, of North Tyneside Council Building Design Agency, “but it is sustainable, cost effective and has excellent insulation properties.”

The new extension, which will more than double the size of the nursery, will be constructed using a timber frame consisting of 120mm studs, with 9mm OSB covered with ‘Breather Foil’ membrane.
