An online “salvage yard” is proving a magnet for trade and retail customers searching for bargains, reports a 150-year-old Edinburgh timber merchant.

Mitchell Timber (Leith) Ltd, which also sells kitchens, walls, ceilings and joinery, says its website feature is becoming a “must-see” for traders in the Edinburgh area and is helping to give the company an edge in a fiercely competitive and price-sensitive marketplace.

The Salvage Yard, launched in July last year on www.mitchellfirst.co.uk, is updated monthly with the latest end-of-line products from manufacturers and special offers from across product ranges. Retail customers embarking on home improvements have recently begun to log on.

Items currently on sale include square edged steamed beech (26x100mm) in 2.1m lengths, one-hour solid core lipped door blanks and 150m of KD dressed maple facing (chamfered) in 2m and 2.7m sections.

Hamish Mitchell, managing director, said: “The Salvage Yard is just one example of where we have tried to offer that little bit extra. By keeping it as a virtual concept on our website, we minimise costs and maximise the discounts we can offer.”
