A million dollar smuggling racket involving timber being transported from Russia to China has been uncovered.
Officials have seized two train loads of beech, ash and oak, amounting to almost 4,000m3 and complete with all the paperwork necessary for export abroad.
A Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson said criminals can “launder” illegal freight quickly and easily because the various regulatory bodies do not work together.
