The government’s anti-cowboy builder initiative is winning backing from homeowners, according to a national poll.

More than eight out of 10 of those canvassed say they would prefer to use a tradesperson approved by the Quality Mark scheme and 40% would never use somebody who is not approved. The survey, consisting of 500 telephone interviews, found 54% would pay more for a vetted tradesperson, with 80% expecting better quality work.

Construction minister Brian Wilson said: “These messages should be taken seriously by the industry. There is a huge public demand for a reputable scheme which separates honest and reliable firms from the rogues.”

The survey’s findings will form the basis for a Quality Mark advertising and promotional campaign in the spring.
