In January, the new look Wood Awards aimed at recognising and encouraging outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation in timber related to buildings or structures were launched.

The Wood Awards replace the previous Carpenter’s Award and the Timber Industry Awards and are being supported by a diverse group of sponsors covering the entire forest products sector.

As we have seen from the endless gardening and home renovation programmes on TV, timber is undergoing a revival in fashion.

These Awards provide an excellent opportunity to capitalise on this increased interest and popularity by obtaining recognition and publicity for outstanding achievement in wood design and installation. Previous winners include the courtyard roof of the new parliamentary offices at Portcullis House, and the Canterbury Cathedral Education Centre.

Entries are invited for buildings completed between March 31, 2001 and May 31, 2003. Any architect, designer, joinery or installation company or project owner associated with the design, wood supply or construction is eligible. Entries close on May 31.

Of course the Awards are about celebrating the success of the individuals and projects that win, but they need to do much more than that. This is why a primary objective of the new Wood Awards is to raise the profile of timber and timber products with architects and specifiers.

A PR campaign aimed at promoting the Awards in the manufacturing, design, construction and architectural media, as well as national and regional newspapers is planned.

The TTF appeals to all our members to see if they can use the Awards for their own promotional purposes. After all, the winning projects sourced their timber from somewhere. Maybe it was from you? For further info visit www.woodawards.com.
