Stora Enso is asking all its Estonian timber suppliers to prove the origin of their wood.

The company requires 12-digit codes on all its timber purchases to reveal where trees were felled. It initially started demanding the code last year after illegally cut trees from a national park wound up at its Imavere sawmill.

Stora Enso is believed to be the first company to demand this proof of origin on all its timber purchases in the country.

It is one of several co-operating with environmental organisations in lobbying the Estonian government for action to crack down on illegal logging. New forestry legislation introduced stipulates that forest owners must have a written logging permit before trees are felled.
