The chief executive of The Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity was awarded an OBE in the New Years Honours list. Mike Townsend, who has been head of the trust since 1997, was given the award for his services to forestry.

Before joining The Woodland Trust as director of operations in 1995, Mr Townsend worked as an independent forestry consultant and as a regional manager for the Economic Forestry Group. He also previously worked as project manager for the Christian Children’s Fund in Kenya, working on agro-forestry, wood fuel plantations and community woodland.
