A drive to promote the use of wood in design and encourage the architectural and forest industries to work closely together is under way in Scotland.
The latest initiative is a glossy magazine-style publication – Designing with Timber – published by the Forestry Commission and supported by the Scottish Executive.
The aim is to raise awareness among professionals such as architects, designers and specifiers of Scottish timber’s potential uses and availability.
In the foreword to the book, forestry minister Rhona Brankin says: ‘Wood is good. It is a natural, environmentally friendly material. It is non-toxic, biodegradable, recyclable and requires comparatively little energy to process.’
She says that encouraging people to buy Scottish timber products gives woodland owners sound financial reasons to look after woodlands.
The publication can be accessed on the Forestry Commission’s website www.forestry.gov.uk or obtained free by calling 0870 121 4180.
