A growing number of architects, engineers and contractors are thirsting for timber frame construction knowledge, according to Wally Shaw, technical director at Chichester-based Covers Timber Structures Ltd.

Mr Shaw, chairman of the Trussed Rafter Association, has won Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accreditation for his timber frame seminars. And he said invitations to architects to learn more about timber frame construction have met with a massive uptake.

“I have been taken aback by the response – it has been very very positive. I think one of the key aspects is that architects’ time is very limited and they have so much information put to them. But if you can offer a structured package such as CPD then they can pick and choose.

“Most of them are becoming aware of the constraints being put on construction methods with thermal requirements and timber frame is an absolute natural to fulfil those needs.”

Mr Shaw’s power point presentation, which lasts around 75 minutes, covers the environment, past and recent history, Building Regulations – Parts L and E, design issues, management and consumer issues including awkward questions answered.
